Christopher Nolan’s Dark Night trilogy is a masterpiece that not only shaped the superhero genre but the film industry as a whole. I do not believe in having a favourite film however if i was to suggest 100 movies to watch before you die ‘Batman Begins’ would certainly be one.
The 1989 ‘ Batman’ starring Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Kim Basinger. Was an incredible success and I personally really liked that film despite seeing it at the age of 14 in 2015, 26 years after its theatrical release. This film took the television 1966 ‘Batman’ and essentially wiped away the campy, colourful, cheapness and created a darkened grittier, more adult world which felt like it had real stakes, there where a few problems i had with this movie however, the first being the Joker, Played by Jack Nicholson – I believe that the joker was a good portrayal, I wouldn’t say great for the simple fact he was just causing chaos for the sake of chaos, he was about turmoil and sex and power. Yes! that’s what the joker is but he is also political he believes he is right and in a sense of the word he is right … and I just didn’t get the sense of understanding for this character … secondly, a problem i noticed with this movie that i probably wouldn’t have realised had i been around to see it when it first came out is that its sequel … ‘Batman Returns’ was good and i think i actually appreciated this movie more however the following movies after this were so untrue to the source material i mean the Riddler is meant to be some amazingly smart, talented guy who plays mind games and deceit to get what he wants … and yes I will admit in the source material of comics he is sometimes comical but he is not an idiot and he is not a fly-off the handle type of guy … now I am a fan of Jim Carrey movies but please please please, Never Do That Again! I also had a problem with the fact that Batman was willing too and openly attempting to murder the Joker, Batman wont kill it’s his only rule hurt who you want cause all the destruction you want but never kill.
Now Nolan’s ‘Batman Begins’ … I adored this film i believe that this film perfectly captured the essence of Batman and what i appreciated about this film was its continuity, now i am going to start on what i didn’t like about this film because i don’t like saying i like this, this and this and then say whats shit about it because its what you say last that people remember.
At the very end of the movie during the restoration of Wayne Manor there are two points that really annoy me; Alfred (Michael Cain) who I thought was amazingly portrayed in this movie says “I thought this might be a good opportunity for improving the foundations” i thought this was a perfect line to indicate the improvement upon Bruce Wayne’s Bat Cave within future movies however, Bruce Wayne/Batman played by Christian Bale then says “In the southeast corner.” I remember watching this film and literally sighing … i do not like it when the director spoon feeds it to the audience, when Wayne and Alfred and building the Bat Cave, Alfred explains how Bruce’s great grandfather helped slaves escape through the caves south-east corner. The audience understands what the implied statement meant however the movie is amazing and this does not ruin it for me would i like that line taken out sure but does it affect how i view the movie, NO! … I have great respect for Christian Bale and Michael Cain as i do for Christopher Nolan.
